Le passage de la Classification internationale des handicaps (CIH) à la Classification internationale du fonctionnement (CIF) modifie profondément la vision que nos sociétés occidentales ont de la personne handicapée.
Avec la CIH, on était passé du handicap vers la personne handicapée. Avec la nouvelle classification (CIF), on passe de la personne handicapée vers la société handicapante.
Par ailleurs, cette classification n'utilise plus que des termes positifs ou neutres pour respecter le langage politiquement correct des anglo-saxons.
