POST-TRAUMATIC OEDEMA
Its pathogenesis
There are three main factors that lead to a post-traumatic oedema. Its main cause is inflammation. Inflammatory substances increase the amount of interstitial fluids that intact capillaries and lymphatics can not resorbe and/or transport.
A second cause is a direct action of the trauma on the lymphatics. This reduced lymphatic transport capacity leads to chronic oedema as well repetitive infections. The trauma can also lead to a deep vein thrombosis and a phleboedema. Those three factors may be isolated or combined.
